Things to do in Clearwater, Florida
If you haven’t been to Clearwater, Florida before, your in for a treat. Like other Florida destinations, Clearwater has a lot to offer first time visitors and local residents. Most days are sunny and hot from the tropical weather with the occasional rain storm from nowhere. Needless to say, Clearwater Beach is a favorite destination for most visitors but there is so much more to see then just that.
Clearwater Marine Aquarium
This place has really grown in the past few years due to popular movie about Winter the dolphin. But Clearwater Marine Aquarium, Inc. is a non-profit marine animal care and environmental education facility. It maintains marine exhibits for creatures such as dolphins, otters, sea turtles, sharks, stingrays, and starfish. The organization’s activities also include animal assisted therapy and rescue and rehabilitation of injured marine animals. The company was founded in 1972 and is based in Clearwater, Florida.
Pier 60 Clearwater
pier 60 in Clearwater is another popular spot just down the block from the aquarium. Most people enjoy a nice stroll on pier 60 after a day on the beach.
The Clearwater area is known for having many parks. Philippe Park is a Pinellas County park located in Safety Harbor, Florida. The park is named after Odet Philippe, who is credited with introducing grapefruit to Florida. It is situated on 122 acres that was once part of Philippe’s plantation. Philippe was the county’s first non-native settler, arriving in 1842. Philippe is buried in the park but the exact location is undetermined.
Eagle Lake Park
Eagle Lake Park is a county-level park located in Largo, Florida. It is a 163-acre preserve located in a suburban district, consisting of two parcels of land Pinellas County purchased in 1998 and 2006, respectively. The land originally belonged to the Taylor family, one of the peninsula’s first settled American families. It was used as a pasture, and subsequently an orange grove. It has miles of hiking and walking trails, in addition to shelters, playgrounds, wildlife, and the centerpiece lake. It opened in 2010.
